How to read supplement labels
A short reading guide: serving size, amounts per serving, servings per container, ingredients and allergens for the flavor you choose, and directions and warnings. It is a guide to reading labels, not a side-by-side comparison tool.
Supplement labels follow a common layout, but the details differ between products and between flavors of the same product. Use these steps to read a label and compare like quantities. This is a reading guide, not a side-by-side comparison tool.
1. Start with the serving size
The serving size tells you how much one serving is: for example 1 scoop, 2 scoops, 3 capsules, or 2 gummies. A scoop, capsule, or gummy is not always one serving. All amounts on the label are per serving, so compare servings, not scoops.
2. Check servings per container
Servings per container tells you how long a container lasts at the listed serving size. To compare value, look at the amount of an ingredient per serving and the number of servings, rather than the container price alone.
3. Compare the same ingredient and amount
Find the ingredient you care about in the Supplement Facts or Nutrition Facts panel and compare its amount per serving across products. Two products can share an ingredient name but list different amounts or forms.
4. Read the other ingredients and allergens
Below the facts panel, “Other ingredients” lists flavors, sweeteners, colors, and capsule materials. Allergen statements such as “Contains milk” appear on the label when they apply. These can change between flavors, so check the flavor you plan to buy.
5. Note caffeine and stimulants
Pre-workout products list caffeine per serving. If you are looking at training powders, check the caffeine amount on each label.
6. Stacks are separate products
A stack contains separate products sold together. Each one keeps its own label, directions, and warnings. Read each product’s label rather than treating the stack as one formula.
7. Read directions and warnings on the package
Directions and warnings are printed on each product’s packaging. Read them before use. If you have questions about whether a supplement is suitable for you, ask a qualified healthcare professional.
